Ten years ago I worked on an album called ‘Cosmochemistry’ with Geomatic (Serge Marinec and Andrei Vasiljev). To say the tracks are stunning would be doing them a great disservice – words really can’t describe the joy I felt when I first heard how they had transformed my humble sounds and sequences, using their own cinematic style, into something so massive, powerful and memorable.
It is fair to say that it is one of my favourite collaborations, if not THE favourite.
This union came about because I had been in touch with Serge since the early 90’s, when we would spend hours on the ‘phone, talking about how this or that sound was made on my Legion albums, or what pieces of equipment we were lusting after that week. He sent me their demo tracks on CDR and I would try to offer encouragement, although they didn’t need my help – they were already forging a deep path for themselves in the world of electronic music production and in my opinion, they are light years ahead of so many others in the field.
Very sadly, in April this year, I was contacted by Andrei, who told me that Serge had passed away in February, suddenly and totally unexpectedly. This was a terrible shock, as I know they had big plans together for future releases and Serge had been emailing me about the latest AI voice synthesis programs I should be trying out. They even made a short track for me, to encourage me to continue, despite my own health issues. I was so moved by their empathy, even though I had never met them.
All I can say is please recognise their amazing work and support Andrei* as he tries to come to terms with such a huge personal loss https://geomatic.bandcamp.com/
Thank you for reading.
